Family Assistance Program (FAP)

The COVID-19 pandemic has detrimentally affected the incomes of approximately 50% of households here in the Coachella Valley, and many of these families consist of front-line workers who literally risk their lives providing services allowing all of us to continue to live and enjoy our lifestyles.  Without them, our community would be unable to sustain itself, and the beautiful destination that is the Coachella Valley would deteriorate before our eyes.

Our local COVID- affected families often find themselves vulnerable, without knowing where to turn for assistance.  Reduced hours, furloughed positions, and lost jobs continue to plague these heroes, and supportive services are waning.  These families are scared, desperate, and running out of options.  Stories of promised support lead to false hope, while bills and notices pile up.  Anxiety is mounting, and youth suicide in the country has doubled since the onset of the pandemic.

We rely upon the services offered by our front-line workers, but who can they rely on?

Working collaboratively, the Fogelson Family Foundation and Jewish Family Service of the Desert (JFS) have joined together to create the Family Assistance Program (FAP) for OUR Coachella Valley residents and who have been hurt economically by the pandemic.

FAP offers qualifying households an account between $500-$1000 (depending on the size of the household) to be used on necessities such as food and medication, overdue rent and utilities, and minor household repairs leading to a more safe environment.  Importantly, approved households have the ability to direct payment to specific necessities and have up to six months to use the funds.  This allows for increased stability while offering the dignity that comes with involvement and directing household actions.

Qualifying households are those that:

  • have at least 3 full-time residents in the household;
  • have had incomes reduced or eliminated due to the pandemic and are unable to pay for rent, utilities (electricity, gas, and water), food, and/or medications; and
  • have a combined family income at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Line (HHS FPL Guidelines)

This describes thousands of area households, and the need is growing and will last until well after vaccinations have been administered.

In reaching out to JFS, the Fogelson Foundation represented by Jerry Fogelson and Bea Keats indicated a desire to offer financial assistance to those who offer all of us the opportunity to live and enjoy the desert.  “If we help them, we also benefit.”

We ask you to support your Coachella Valley by joining our proven efforts to alleviate the unexpected realities of financial hardship.  Your donations are tax-deductible, and every cent donated will be made available to qualifying households.  And, please remember that supporting front-line workers helps all of us!

Please give us a call at 760-325-4088 ext. 107 or send us a note to FAP@jfsdesert.org.

Your consideration is much appreciated; your support will forever change lives!
